15 km — 24oC and cloudy — We met 31more pilgrims on their way to Rome and 1 on his way towards Canterbury
(By Jim)
Brunella’s Cameres were over 700 years old and security was decidedly medieval. Leaving in the morning at 5:30 was like the opening sequence to the 1960s TV show Get Smart. We had to unlock and then re-lock four unusually large heavy wooden doors, with increasingly elaborate locking mechanisms. We were told by Brunella to be quiet and not wake the German guests sleeping in the other room … we were anything but quiet as, despite our best efforts, iron tumblers and sliding rods clanked and banged at every door. By the time we got to the street we had scared all the birds away and I thought I heard someone say, “Verdammte laut Kanadier!”
Today was an easy day at 13.4 kms to Gambassi Terme and another 1.5 to Ostello Sigerico. Laurel stopped cursing Sandy Brown, the guide book author, and was now acting as if he was an old friend. It had rained last night and the sky was still clouded when we put San Gimignano in our rear view mirror. The walk was cool and short with major swings in elevations up and down, so two out of three ain’t bad.
We had second breakfast at the Bar Centrale in the hub of Gambassi Terme, then relocated to the adjacent green park to enjoy shade. The Ostello did not open until 14:30 so Laurel wrote her blog post while I went in search of picnic supplies. After focaccia, ham, cheese and tomato, we packed up and hobbled down the hill to Santa Maria Assunta and our well maintained medieval Ostello. A simple communal supper with other pilgrims, include one walking the same direction as us, was a nice end to a relaxing easy day. Thanks Sandy!
